Input - JPG vs HEIC

What's going on with my iPhone's photos? I downloaded all the photos from my iPhoneX, ending up with two copies in iPhoto. When I copied them to my OneDrive, they were both jpg and the same size. What gives?

Apple is moving to High Efficiency Image Container (HEIC) as the file format for still images. I read about the benefits and drawbacks and I understand what's going on. I had my phone set to store pictures in "High Efficiency" mode. That is great as long as the files stay on the phone but exporting ends up creating extra copies.

What's right for me?

So far, the only benefit I see is smaller files on the iPhone. I have plenty of room. The downside with HEIC today is that I can't share them without conversion and that process hasn't been completed or explained well. Each time I sync my phone I would end up with two copies, both jpg, on my hard drive.

Output

I reset my iPhone's photo setting to "More Compatible". That should give me a single jpg file for each picture. I'll let the dust settle on HEIC before committing.
