I'm realizing that some simple UNIX grammar is going to be helpful. FileZilla and BBEdit have protected me from the command line but when I want to start automating, I'm going to need to be conversationally fluent in UNIX. Good thing the MacOS has a UNIX heritage.
Going from Apple to Sun offerred me the opportunity to learn networking, specifically TCP/IP. It also meant I would have to learn UNIX. Coming from Apple, Sun seemed like a big step backwards in productivity.
We used FrameMaker as a word processor and that took a lot of re-thinking how documents should work. The Solaris OS had a GUI but you could tell the engineering was put into things that could only be done in a command line.
Managing a site from a terminal. I brushed up on my UNIX commands and I'm keeping a cheat sheet. From the MacOS bash shell I can execute commands but I remember how easily I could screw up entire directories or make files disappear. I'll go slowly into this.
Quartz Layer - January 15, 2018
Luann and I are watching a course on geology and discovering some answers to questions we've had about the rocks on our shore. I've always been fascinated by the layering, especially where a layer of white quartz is exposed by the waves and large bolders containing these lines are rolled around the shore. Geology puts things in perspective.
