WordPress

Yesterday I went on a short rant about the web today - how it's gotten so fat and out of control.

I'm frustrated by today's web. There's so much junk, so many tricks (click the 30 pages below to find the nugget you're looking for) and just so much content thrown onto a page, it makes the web experience dreadful, not delightful. Much of this is because modern tools make it easy to be a web publisher and there's money in getting people to visit your site.

Content Mangement Systems (cms) are popular and WordPress claims that nearly one third of all web pages are created and hosted on WordPress sites. They are sort of the Microsoft Word of writing on the web. You can check them out at http://wordpress.org.

Here's my WordPress site: http://wordpress.rugebregt.com

WordPress automates much of the html coding, letting the author focus on content. It sits somewhere between hand-coded html pages and a service like Facebook. I still had to have a server and install the software but it comes pre-packaged and is relatively easy to maintain and certainly lets me make a more graphically appealing site. It's a tough decision - buy the 'sensible' economy car or get one that goes faster and looks better.

These are pictures from 2001. The Carmel mission is a popular photo spot, with many interesting views. Some classic photos have been taken there. These were taken in 2001 with my first Kodak digital camera. I really like the way this camera produced colors. Much as there were different qualities of 35mm film, electronic camera sensors have a personality to them. I was a Kodachrome 64 shooter in the day and I like the fullness of the colors the Kodak sensor produces right out of the camera.
