I'm testing out Little Snitch , a network monitoring program.
I've spent most of my career working for network security companies. Some of them sold access equipment, some sold security gear and some of them sold spy gear. I'm not a network engineer but I do have a pretty good understanding of how the internet works.
My jobs gave me access to gear that allowed pretty deep inspection of network traffic but I was never interested in managing a firewall or setting up a lot of hardware at home. But this morning I downloaded "Little Snitch" and I think it's just what I want.
I've know of Little Snitch for a long time and hadn't tried it. After I spent a few hours with the demo, I decided to purchase a copy and see what my computer was doing with my internet connection.
Most of what you've heard is true. My browser sends out a lot of information to places I never heard of. Some it is useful but a lot of it is clutter, or worse, provides sites you never heard of with information on me that I'd rather not reveal.
I've never been keen on all the social media sites. I have Facebook and Twitter accounts but only so that others can't sign up using my name and pretend they are me. But now I can REALLY block data going to FaceBook, DoubleClick, Google Analytics and all the sites that capture and process personal data. I'm just getting started building rules in Little Snitch and they make if very simple. This is worth exploring.
